Winter Storm Survival

A winter storm watch signifies that a winter storm is possible in your area. When a storm watch is made you should listen to NOAA Weather Radio, local radio, tv stations, or cable tv stations such as The Weather Channel. You should also be aware of shifting weather conditions, and avoid unnecessary travel.

A winter storm warning signifies that a winter storm is headed for your region. When a winter storm warning is made, you should keep in mind the following tips:

· Stay sheltered during the storm.

· If you must leave your shelter, several layers of lighter clothing will keep you warmer than an individual heavy coat. Gloves/mittens and a hat will also prevent the loss of body heat. Cover your mouth to protect your lungs.

· Understand the hazards of wind chill.

· Walk carefully on icy sidewalks.

· If you are shoveling snow after the storm remember to take frequent breaks to prevent tiring out.

· Try not to travel by car in a storm. But if you must travel: stock a disaster supplies kit in the trunk, preserve the gas in your car’s tank for emergency purposes and to keep the fuel line from freezing, let someone know your intended destination, itinerary, and when you expect to arrive.

A blizzard warning signifies that strong winds, blinding wind-driven snow, and hazardous wind chill are anticipated. You should immediately seek shelter.

Contributions made by the public allows for The American Red Cross to offer assistance to individuals and families in the wake of winter storms and other emergencies. This assistance may include shelter, clothing, blankets, or possibly even food. Donations obviously come in many forms. Of Late, The American Red Cross has been prompting people to think ‘outside the box’ and consider donating a used car or other vehicle. All vehicles are taken, and they don’t even need to be functional. Donated vehicles sold by the American Red Cross for over $500 can be claimed as a tax deduction.
