Before these gadgets were called walkie talkie radios they were known as hand held transceivers.
The invention can be credited to an engineering team at Motorola that caused an important communication device to be manufactured for the United States armed forces during World War Two.
It was consequently introduced to public use by construction sites, warehouses with too much distance between workers and other like situations.
The walkie talkie radios are larger than the standard telephone without its base. They resemble a telephone headset without the antenna. They have two buttons that activates conversation between two people, one to talk and one to listen. Many people can listen to the conversations but they cannot participate.
Many countries allow the use of the walkie talkie radio for commercial and/or personal use.
Today the gadget can be as small as a pack of cigarettes. Radios used for commercial use are primarily stronger and made with metal cases and operate on one frequency. The personal use or, consumer use model weighs less and operates on many frequencies within its own band.
Though similar to the commercial and consumer models, the amateur radios have more features such as a scanner with which they can listen to non amateur bands.
The most modern models operate on an ultra high frequency band and have AM and FM reception. They have text and photo capabilities between similarly equipped radios.
The radios are not just for land use and can be used in small boats and planes where a stationary radio would be too costly to install. In such a situation it is used to access emergency and information channels.
