emergency wind up radio
TV change to HD? What about all my emergency Wind up TVs and radios?
When everything changes in Feb. 2008 I am not worried about the house Tvs. My concern is my tornado emergency Kit with the expensive wind up TV/Radio. How about the radios that have TV audio for emergencys? Is all of this trash now and what will we do in an emergency?
Radios with TV audio will no longer pick up pick up TV audio after 2/17/09. They will still pick up regular AM/FM radio.
Adding analog VHF TV sound to a FM radio is fairly cheap for a manufacturer. Adding digital TV sound to a radio is relatively expensive so don’t expect radios to offer that feature.
Portable analog TVs that do not have a way to add an external antenna or A/V jacks will not be usable after 2/17/09.
Portable analog TVs that have jacks for an external antenna or A/V cables can be used with converter boxes but by the time you add the converter and a battery pack to power it, it gets pretty bulky.
I haven’t seen any web articles on which converters are best suited for this (size, voltage, power consumption) but there will be before 2/17/09.
If you are not going to be lugging this around you might just get one of those dual purpose Auto jump start/12 volt power source gadgets to power the TV and converter. Does double duty in jump starting cars with dead batteries and charging cell phones.
Portable TVs with digital tuners are available starting at about $150 if you really need portability.

Spend the effort and money to get what you think you need or else live without them like most people do. Most people get by with just a plain old battery powered radio.
