emergency crank radio

I guess most of us have thought about putting a survival kit together. According to the Federal Government these are the basic items you need.
- Water, one gallon per day per person
- Food, 3 day supply per person (non-perishable)
- Flashlight, with extra batteries
- Radio, hand crank or battery powered
- Dust mask
- Whistle
- Moist toweletts
- Pliers or wrench to turn off utilities
- Local area maps
- Can opener
- Prescription medication
- Baby food (if you have infants)
- Pet food and water
- Water proof container for documents(insurance policies, bank info, cash, ID, ect)
- Extra clothing
- Household bleach (for disinfectant)
- Fire extinguisher
- Liter or matches
- Feminine products
- Eating utensils (paper plates, plastic knives and forks)
- Pen & paper
- Playing cards and games
About a year ago a large wind storm knocked out the power to most of western Washington State. We were left without electricity for over seven days.
Â
We tend to forget how reliant we are on electric power. No hot showers, no lights, no cooking, no television or radio, and no stores or restaurants open anywhere. It was really roughing it. Actually it was kind of fun and exciting for a couple of days, and then it got real old real fast.
Â
This was the first time I had a chance to dig in to my emergency survival kit. One of the most valuable items in the kit was a hand crank radio. It was our only link to the outside world. We kept a fire going in the fire place (for warmth) and listened to that radio all day. We also had a deck of cards to keep us entertained.
Â
I have a new found respect for emergency survival kits. I keep one in my house and one in my car. These kits are stocked much better then my old one. You can buy these kits online at buyemergencysurvivalkits In most cases they are less expensive then trying to build your own. Â Â

CC Observer wind-up emergency radio (Black) $39.00 Yup it looks familiar. The CC Observer is a wind-up emergency radio that makes no bones about outperforming a distant cousin. You might notice that we did a few things differently. For one thing, we tinkered with the AM for better reception, and then we put the LED flashlight on the side of the radio instead of the front. That way, when you turn it on the light doesn×t shine in your face, and … |
