A secret shopper (also known as mystery shopper) is someone who goes undercover to a particular retail site such as a store, restaurant, hotel, or movie theatre, to analyse and report on the quality of the experience evaluating areas such as customer service, friendliness, sanity, product quality (if applicable) and such. Mystery shopping is a lot more common than most people assume, and is a key tool applied by corporate executives.
Why Become One?
Secret shopping is a great job for many reasons, however it should not be ones sole source of income. This job is excellent for individuals such as students and stay at home moms. It allows the freedom to work as much or as little as you want and when you want. For stay at home moms, this job is great because it allows them to take their children along with them. Sometimes your work assignments require you to purchase products, and possibly test new products out. In these situations you would get reimbursed for the purchase, as well as get to keep the products! Restaurant assignments are great too because you get to eat out at different restaurants, and not only is your meal paid for, but you get paid on top of that!
How To Become One:
Many individual stores hire mystery shoppers directly. Retail stores usually have a centralized department running from head office. One way to obtain secret shopper jobs would be to contact these departments directly and let them know you are interested in becoming a mystery shopper. An easier way to obtain many jobs is to sign up with a reputable secret shopper network. These networks typically have relationships with thousands of companies (across USA & Canada) who require mystery shopper services.
